Welcome to Zagreb, the largest city and the capital of Croatia!

Zagreb is located in continental central Croatia on the southern slopes of Medvednica and on the banks of the Sava. The city that has been highlighted by the Lonely Planet as one of the top European destinations in 2017. A vivid city rich in history and culture, amazing cuisine and exciting nightlife.

Ban Jelačić Square

Situated in the historic core of the city. The square is one of the most famous views in the city of Zagreb. The square was named after the Croatian ban Josip Jelačić, who was the commander of the Habsburg troops in Croatia. Today, the square is in the center of the pedestrian zone and is the most popular gathering place for the inhabitants and tourists as well, which also makes it the center of social life in Zagreb.

Gornji Grad

Gornji Grad in Zagreb is filled with narrow streets situated between two hills, Kaptol and Gradec. Here you will find many attractions such as Markov trg (where the Croatian Parliament is located), the Dolac market where you can buy fresh produce, the Stone Gate that which were a part of the defensive system of Gradec. Also, you will be able to visit the Museum of broken links, a reminder of the consequences of the fallen love, do not miss the Lotrščak tower or the Klovićevi Dvori gallery named after the famous Croatian artist Jurja Julija Klović. Gornji grad also offers a variety of cafés where you can rest after a long day of sightseeing.

Zagreb Cathedral

This cathedral is truly incredible sight and is also located in Upper Town. The Zagreb cathedral is a Gothic sacral building and is the tallest building in Croatia with its 108 meters height. He is devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The original cathedral was destroyed in the great fire in the 19th century and was completely restored. While you are there, do not miss the marble altar and the tomb of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac made by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.

The habitat of various animal and plant species, Maksimir, is the oldest park in Croatia. The scenery reminds you of English gardens, and the best way to experience it is to gently walk through its aisles and pavilions. If you happen to be traveling with children, take them to a zoo located in the southern part of the park. Children will probably adore the fact that they can feed otters, seals and sea lions in the zoo. Next, to the park, you can also visit the stadium of Dinamo Zagreb club.

North of Zagreb lies the Medvednica Mountain, which is the highest peak of Sljeme. What makes this mountain particularly interesting is the sports center where world ski races are held. Once upon a time, the races were called “Golden Bear”, and the name changed in 2006 to honor the four-time Olympic winner Janica Kostelić. Today, Medvednica has a nature park and is home to many plant and animal species, and some trees that grow there are over 1000 years old. All in all, if you love nature and hiking, then definitely explore Medvednica.

You can also explore other places near Zagreb such as Plitvice Lakes or Trakošćan Castle

Zagreb is most likely to have the best nightlife in Croatia because it offers a wide range of live music bars, which are often transformed into clubs when the night falls. Zagreb really has something for everyone, whether you are looking for something comfortable and peaceful to relax with a glass of wine or a crazy place to ponder until dawn. One of the best places is definitely the Culture Factory where you can listen to rock and pop live compositions.

If you are an alternative soul, we recommend that you visit Močvara, where young people gather for a little ‘underground’ entertainment or the Vintage Industrial Bar where you can listen to the full spectrum of live music.

If you are looking for a popular party destination, then visit Aquarius, the only club that is open all year round. In addition, this club offers its summer specialty when it opens its beach bars at Zrće in Novalja.

If you are looking for a fine but enjoyable place to enjoy the best cocktails in town, Swanky Monkey Garden is the place for you. You do not even have to leave the city center because it is located in Ilica, the main street of Zagreb. In addition to cocktails, morning coffee is offered with different flavors.

Finally, if you still cannot decide where to go first, we suggest you go to pub crawl because that’s probably the simplest way to make sure that the night is exciting. The meeting place is the Johann Franck Bar, which is close to the city center.

If you want to bring an interesting souvenir home, go to Tkalčićeva Street because this is the best offer of clothing from domestic and foreign designers. If you prefer a shopping center, Kaptol Center and Flower Square are a few minutes’ walks from the main square. Importanne Galleria is also located in the very center and offers a large selection of well-known brands of clothing and footwear. Avenue Mall, Arena Center, City Center One West, City Center One East, and Garden Mall are just over the city center. There is also King Cross Jankomir, half an hour drive from the center, and it is also the first shopping center to be opened in this area in 2002.

Where to eat in Zagreb

If you visit Zagreb after a long day of sightseeing, you will find a great selection of restaurants for everyone’s palate. Recently, more and more restaurants have been checked by the Michelin Guide Controller, which is the ultimate proof that the kitchen in Zagreb is getting better every day. Here are some of our favorites:

Apetit is located in the very center of the city, combining Middle-European and Mediterranean cuisine, using the best of both worlds. This is a great place to relax and meet friends or business partners.

Zinfandel’s got its name by grape varieties that came to the US from Dalmatia in the 19th century. Today, the wine of this variety is very popular today. In fact, this is a trademark of this restaurant, and you can see the right grape growing on the terrace of the restaurant. Zinfandel’s combines domestic and international cuisine.

Looking for a cozy, intimate atmosphere restaurant that also offers the finest ingredients, Mano is the ideal place to go for it. It is located in the historic building of Gliptoteka, just 10 minutes’ walk from the main square. In that, once, skin factory, the restaurant still has some original features like wooden boards and brick walls. I change twice a year, depending on the age of the year.

Boban is an Italian restaurant owned by the soccer star Zvonimir Boban. This place really knows about carbohydrates; their pasta is handmade, and the pie and bread. It is located in the city center also.

On the other hand, if you are looking for something fast for snacks, we recommend burgers in the Rocket Burger Cafe. In addition to the overwhelmingly tasty burgers, a wide range of beers is also offered.
